Repair & Maintenance

Technical Characteristics

  • Carboncor Repair and Maintenance is used for the repair of potholes, new skid resistant road surfaces, or more heavy-duty resurfacing on existing asphalt, concrete and dirt roads.
  • No heat is required to prepare the product or to apply it.
  • Does not require a conventional primer or tack coat before application.
  • Water is used as a primer.
  • Does not bleed in hot weather.
  • There is no lateral movement.
  • Is not sensitive to climatic conditions; successful installations were carried out at temperatures well below freezing as well as temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius.
  • Traffic may be accommodated immediately after compaction, but for very high traffic flow and heavier loads, or at intersections open to traffic after 1 – 2 hours, depending on weather or wetness of mix.
  • Exceptional binding properties. It binds to existing asphalt or any surface surrounding pothole.
  • Light kg per m3 of the product and the zero wastage factor lead to a high yield per metric ton of material laid.
  • There is zero wastage.
  • The product is non-hazardous and environmentally friendly

Recommended Procedures for Repairing Potholes and Patching

  • Prepare pothole by squaring it off using a pick and a spade.
  • Eradicate all grasses and weeds chemically; remove all stones and loose debris.
  • If pothole is deeper than 30mm then, preferably fill with crusher run or equivalent, leaving a maximum of 30mm in depth to reduce costs and material usage. Use a small compactor, hand or vibrating stamper to compact the base well.
  • Surface should have no loose material.
  • Slightly dampen surface and edges of pothole.
  • Empty contents of Carbon Asphalt Repair and Maintenance into the pothole and work through with a rake.
  • Be certain that the material is spread evenly to ensure a smooth, level finish.
  • Allow for about 20mm of material to overlap edges of pothole and a thickness of 5mm to 10mm above the surface of the surrounding road.
  • Sprinkle with a little water using a watering can and compact with a hand stamper, or a pedestrian roller (keep wheels wet during use). The combination of water and compaction brings the fines to the surface to completely seal the pothole.
  • Pothole may be opened to traffic immediately. If the product is applied at intersections or where vehicles are turning, allow 1 – 2 hours to set.
  • If crusher run is not available our Asphalt may be used to fill the entire hole by applying it at a maximum of 40mm compacted to 30mm at a time. The next layer of Asphalt is then applied accordingly. The procedure remains the same. If the entire pothole is filled all at once and the pothole depresses, simply top up the pothole after a 24 hour period. Alternatively, deep potholes should be filled 15mm to 20mm above the surface of the surrounding road in order to prevent it from depressing. Please note NOT to wet the newly compacted surface before placing asphalt for the second or third layers, as this may cause water to be trapped between the layers and increase curing time.

Technical Data

Texture: Tacky when wet

Colour: Black

Storage life: 12 months (sealed) l 2 weeks (opened, but covered)

Environmental Statistic: Environmentally friendly l Non-hazardous

Coverage: One 25kg bag will yield +/- 0.8m²@ a compacted thickness of 15mm.

Cleaning: When fresh, Carboncor Repair and Maintenance can be removed from equipment, tools and hands, with water; otherwise they should be cleaned with a solvent as for ordinary bitumen.

Storage: Product can be stored for up to 12 months if stored in a cool place. If opened, it is reusable for up to 14 days so long as the unused material is covered and then remixed before application, adding a little water to reactivate the concentrate, ensure no exposure to direct sunlight. If excess product is resealed within a few hours after use, it is again reusable for up to 12 months. Therefore there is no wastage.
